Michael Roth – Composer

Michael Roth is a California-based composer, music director and sound designer whose work encompasses film, chamber music, opera, and over 250 theatre productions and premieres. Recent projects, upcoming productions, and works-in-progress include: composing the score for THE TEMPEST at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Canada featuring Christopher Plummer, Des McAnuff, director, also being filmed for Bravo; musical direction for the Disney Animated Feature THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, songs by Randy Newman; the score for the independent feature YOUR NAME HERE with Bill Pullman, directed by Matt Wilder; music for the world premieres of BROOKLYN BOY and A WALK IN THE WOODS (Broadway); TALKING HEADS, DINNER WITH FRIENDS (Pulitzer Prize), SIGHT UNSEEN, THE PERSIANS (off-Broadway); many additional collaborations with Randy Newman including orchestrating FAUST and editing five songbooks; collaborating with Tom Stoppard on the American premieres of INDIAN INK and INVENTION OF LOVE; collaborating with Sarah Ruhl on the west coast premiere of MELANCHOLY PLAY; many collaborations with Mac Wellman including their music/theatre piece THE ALLEGORY OF WHITENESS (Humana Festival, 2001); as a resident artist, many productions at La Jolla Playhouse and South Coast Repertory including THE BIRDS (music/theatre with Culture Clash); his chamber piece STRIECH, winner of the first ACF/LA award, and his upcoming setting of Beckett’s IMAGINATION DEAD IMAGINE (Subito Grant winner); and, for the UN, music and sound for their interactive landmine safety DVD.
